Dan Hillier - but not as you know him.
I first discovered UK based artist and Ruskin graduate, Dan Hillier, on a trip to Brick Lane Market with my boyfriend. He runs his stall at the Sunday Upmarket at the Old Truman Brewery selling in person his range of tote bags and t-shirts. He is perhaps best know for his graphic ink drawings which can only be described as a hybrid of the Victorian gentleman cross-bred with an octopus. Tentacles, antlers and horse-heads all make an appearance in these fantastically surreal pieces. But recently I've been more interested in his lesser known journals that document his travels in India and Nepal in 1997-8. The multi-layered effect of pen drawings, photographs, his personal musings, and newspaper cuttings makes for a visual feast. So if you find yourself in London's East End anytime soon do make sure to check him out.
